Will my Windows 10 computer stop working on 14th October?

Support for Windows 10 ends soon. But no need to panic. The sky is not going to fall in and your computer will not suddenly stop working.

9 days to go before end of win 10 support

What will happen on October 14th is the following (as far as we are lead to believe)

  1. The FREE optional upgrade to Windows 11 will continue to be available for some time to come
  2. Windows 10 updates will stop being sent to your computer, including security (Windows Defender)
  3. The Paid Windows 10 Extended Security Updates option will become available for 1 year, for USD 30 click here to find out more about Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU)

Programs such as Microsoft 365 Office and Browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox should continue to work and have available updates for months or even years.

But you should be aware of ongoing security risks. A lack of updates from Windows 10 means that new vulnerabilities could be discovered and exploited, making your device more vulnerable to viruses and malware.

To increase your protection if you continue to use Windows 10 post October 14th without the ESU, it would be wise to:

  1. Use a paid Anti-Virus program such as Nortons, McAfee, Trend etc.
  2. Do not use Microsoft Edge Browser. Use a current browser from Mozilla (Firefox), Google (Chrome) etc.
  3. Follow best practice security advise such as that issued by The Australian Signals Directorate on their website https://www.cyber.gov.au/protect-yourself
