Troubleshooting adding Email Accounts to Outlook for Windows

We show how to troubleshoot and fix issues adding a new email account to Outlook App for Windows

Follow these steps:

  1. Make sure the password for the account is correct by trying to access the email account via webmail in a browser

    Examples:
    iiNet Webmail login: https://webmail.iinet.net.au/login
    Westnet Webmail login: https://webmail.westnet.com.au/login
    Bigpond/Telstra Login: https://email.telstra.com/

    Telstra and Optus accounts need an “APP Specific Password” generated from their webmail.

    If you cannot access webmail, reset the password by clicking on “Forgot My Password” and try again
  2. Check Windows updates

    Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options
    Click On … “Receive updates for other Microsoft Products”
    Go back to “Settings > Windows Update” … and hit the “Check for updates” button
    Download and install Updates, restart computer
  3. Check Microsoft Office Updates

    Open Outlook App
    Goto File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now
    Run any updates
    Restart Computer

  4. Check Microsoft Office Version

    Problems can be related to an outdated version of Microsoft Office:

    If not one of the following supported versions of Office, then upgrade to latest Office 365

    Supported Versions of Office

    Office 365
    Office 2021
    Office 2024
