The only downloadable versions of Microsoft Office currently (2026) are Microsoft (Office) 365 or Microsoft Office 2024
The only downloadable version of Microsoft Office currently (2026) are, by subscription Microsoft 365/Office 365 or as a stand-alone perpetual license, “Office 2024” both which will only install on Windows 10 or 11.
So if your computer is currently running Windows 10 or earlier, you may firstly need to upgrade to Windows 11 or purchase a new Windows 11 device before purchasing Microsoft Office 2024 or Microsoft Office 365 Office versions.
Although Office 2021 is still being sold by some non-Microsoft retailers, it is not recommended to be purchased as it will shortly need to be upgraded as support and updates cease on 13 October 2026.
What are the differences between the various Microsoft Office versions on offer?
Microsoft Office has many versions but 2 distinct license types
- Licensed per month or per year – now called “Microsoft 365“
- Perpetual licence (one-time purchase) – Microsoft Office 2024

Microsoft Office 2024 offers a perpetual licence which in effect is supported for around 3 or 5 years.
(Support for Office 2024 is scheduled to end in October 9, 2029)
- Microsoft Office 2024 can only be installed on a single PC or Mac
- Office 2024 lacks any cloud storage (Onedrive) besides the free 5GB
- Office Home 2024 (formerly Home & Student) does not include “Outlook” but includes “CoPilot”
- Office Home & Business 2024 – lacks “CoPilot” but includes “Outlook”
