If your iCloud Photos are not syncing between your iPhone, iPad or Mac, photos may be missing from one device or recent pictures may not appear everywhere. The most common causes include a full iCloud storage allowance, a paused sync, a poor internet connection or different Apple Accounts being used on your devices.
This guide explains how to check your iCloud Photos status, identify the cause and get your photos syncing again without risking your photo library. When iCloud is setup correctly and there is sufficient iCloud storage, the number of photos in iCloud, iPhone, iPad, Mac and iCloud for Windows should be identical.
1. Check whether iCloud Photos syncing is paused
Before changing settings, check whether your iPhone, iPad or Mac is still uploading or downloading photos.
On an iPhone or iPad:
- Open the Photos app.
- Open Collections and tap your profile button in the top corner.
- Look below your name and photo count for the library status message.
- Follow any instructions shown, such as connecting to Wi-Fi, charging your device or freeing up iCloud storage.
On a Mac:
- Open the Photos app.
- Select Library in the sidebar, then choose All Photos.
- Scroll to the bottom of the library to check its sync status.
If syncing is paused, the status message may explain why. Low battery, Low Power Mode, Low Data Mode, a poor internet connection or full iCloud storage can all interrupt syncing.
Connect your device to power and reliable Wi-Fi, then allow it time to finish syncing. A large photo library can take several hours or overnight.
Important: Don’t turn iCloud Photos off as your first troubleshooting step. Check the status message and follow Apple’s instructions first.
2. Check your iCloud storage
If your iCloud storage is full, new photos and videos may stop uploading.
click on the 12-dots in the top right-hand-corner of icloud.com as shown below
…and select “Your iCloud Storage”, hopefully you you see something like the following with plenty of unused space
but if you are only relying on the 50GB of Free storage that comes with every account, you may see a message such as this
There is a detailed breakdown of what applications are using space. If you wish to see more details click on the arrow to the right of the item.
How many photos do I have stored in iCloud?
Again click on the 12-dots in the top right hand corner of the browser and select the Photos symbol
Select “Library” and scroll to the bottom of the page for the answer
Obviously the numbers will be different on your computer … but now look on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Open Photos, scroll to the bottom of the library and all being well, you should see a similar set of numbers, confirming syncing between your various devices is working correctly
On your iPhone or iPad:
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud.
- Check how much storage is available.
If storage is full, review what is using it or consider upgrading your iCloud+ plan. Before deleting photos or files to make room, make sure you have another copy of anything you want to keep.
Remember that iCloud storage and device storage are different. Your iPhone can have plenty of free space while your iCloud storage is full, or the other way around.
For Apple’s instructions, see Manage your iCloud storage.
3. Make sure all devices use the same Apple Account
Your iPhone, iPad and Mac must use the same Apple Account for their photos to sync through the same iCloud Photos library.
On an iPhone or iPad:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Check the Apple Account email address.
- Tap iCloud, then Photos.
- Make sure Sync this iPhone or Sync this iPad is switched on. The wording may vary with your software version.
On a Mac:
- Open the Photos app.
- Choose Photos → Settings from the menu bar.
- Select the iCloud tab.
- Make sure iCloud Photos is enabled.
- Check that the Mac is signed in to the same Apple Account as your other devices.
If a device uses a different Apple Account, its photos may belong to a separate library and won’t automatically appear in the other devices’ iCloud Photos library.
Important: Don’t sign out of your Apple Account or turn off iCloud Photos simply to test syncing. First confirm the account details and settings, and make sure any important photos are safely backed up.
For Apple’s official instructions, see Set up and use iCloud Photos.
4. Check your internet connection and wait for syncing
iCloud Photos needs a reliable internet connection to upload and download photos. If your connection is slow or interrupted, recent pictures may take longer to appear on your other devices.
Try these checks:
- Open a website: Confirm your device can access the internet.
- Use reliable Wi-Fi: If possible, connect to a stable Wi-Fi network rather than relying on a weak mobile connection.
- Connect your device to power: A low battery or power-saving settings may pause syncing.
- Check Low Data Mode: If enabled, it can restrict background network activity.
- Allow time: A large photo library, especially one containing videos, may take hours or longer to sync.
If you use a Mac, leave Photos open while the library finishes syncing. On an iPhone or iPad, check the status shown in Photos for any message explaining why syncing is paused.
If you’re using a VPN or have recently changed your router or Wi-Fi settings, temporarily test with another trusted internet connection to see whether the connection is contributing to the problem.
Avoid repeatedly switching iCloud Photos off and on. Check the status message first and follow any instructions it provides.

Your Apple ID should be the same on each of your devices.
If you have forgotten your iCloud password there are many places to reset it, including the website https://iforgot.apple.com/
Once logged in at iCloud.com you can see what information has been stored and how much stoage space you have available
You will have noted that the number of photos varies slightly between devices but the important thing to note is that they tell you that they are “updated” or have “recently been updated” or have “Synced with iCloud”.
If the comparable numbers are substantially different, the issue needs investigating
6. What not to do when iCloud Photos won’t sync
Before trying more advanced fixes, keep these points in mind:
- Don’t delete photos to free up iCloud storage unless you understand that deleting synced photos can remove them from your other devices too.
- Don’t turn off iCloud Photos as your first step. Check the sync status and follow Apple’s troubleshooting advice.
- Don’t sign out of your Apple Account without preparation. Make sure you understand which photos are stored locally and which are in iCloud.
- Don’t assume missing photos are permanently lost. Check iCloud.com, Recently Deleted and the correct Apple Account first.
If the problem continues, restart your device, install any compatible software updates and check Apple’s latest advice at iCloud Photos support.
Still having trouble with iCloud Photos?
If your iPhone, iPad or Mac still won’t sync photos after these checks, the cause may involve your Apple Account, storage settings, network connection or photo library.
