How to Export iPhone Text Messages to a PC or Mac

Do you want to export SMS text messages or iMessages from your iPhone to a computer? You might want to save an important conversation as a PDF, keep a permanent copy of messages, print a conversation, or preserve evidence of unwanted or abusive messages.

There are several ways to save iPhone messages, depending on whether you want a backup of your messages or a readable copy of a conversation.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to:

  • Save and preserve important SMS and iMessage conversations.
  • Transfer or back up messages to a Mac or Windows PC.
  • Explore options for exporting conversations to PDF for printing or record-keeping.

Some methods require a computer or additional software, while other options may be available at no extra cost. Choose the method that best suits your needs.

  • Have you been having an important conversation with someone by SMS/TXT or iMessage on your iPhone and want to preserve it or export to a PDF document?
  • Has someone been sending you abusive SMS/TXT or iMessages that you want to report to authorities?
  • Have you been negotiating the sale of something important by TXT/SMS/iMessage and now need to commit it to paper to form a legal document?

The GOOD news is the data is transferrable to a PC or Mac in PDF format

The other GOOD news is, that there is a FREE method of doing so, just using an iPhone

However, the BAD news is that if you want to control the formatting of the output and have the meta tag data included on each message (To, From, Date and Time etc.) then you are going to have to use a 3rd party Application/Program as Apple does not offer a way of doing so.

Apple do not endorse any of these 3rd party Applications and Programs, so they are not available from the Apple App store but there are a couple that come with very good reviews and TrustPilot endorsement and even have a FREE trial option.

We show you the simple ways you can use your iphone to capture conversations below and then a quick review of the paid Apps we have come across after doing our research.

Free method: Save or copy iPhone text messages

You can use the Messages app to select and forward individual messages without purchasing additional software. This is useful for preserving selected parts of a conversation, but it does not automatically export an entire conversation to a formatted PDF.

  1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
  2. Open the conversation you want to preserve.
  3. Touch and hold a message until the options menu appears.
  4. Tap More.
  5. Select the messages you want to keep by tapping the circles beside them.
  6. Tap the curved arrow to forward the selected messages to another recipient, or use the available copy option when you want to copy message text.
  7. If you copy the text, paste it into an email, document or note. You can then save or print that document as a PDF using a suitable app or computer.

Important limitations: This method may not preserve the entire conversation in its original layout, and it may not include all dates, sender details or attachments in a useful format. If you need a complete, chronological record for legal, business or evidence purposes, consider a dedicated message-export tool and check its capabilities before purchasing.

Keep your existing screenshots for this section, as they illustrate selecting messages. Remove or replace any screenshots that show options unavailable in current iOS versions.

Tools for exporting iPhone messages to PDF

If you need to export a complete iMessage or SMS conversation to a computer, a dedicated message-export tool may provide more options than copying messages manually.

Depending on the software, features may include exporting messages to PDF or other formats, retaining timestamps and sender details, and including attachments.

Before purchasing, check that the tool supports your iPhone model, current iOS version and computer operating system. Also confirm whether the feature you need is available in the free trial or requires a paid licence.
